Redundancy - Disaster Or Opportunity?

When your job is made redundant, it’s all to easy to see it as a disaster – as though you’re unwanted, unloved and you’ve been assigned to the scrap heap. Even if you’re quite happy to leave the job you’re in, and move on, you may go through a period of ‘mourning’, of feeling rejected and wondering whether it was somehow your fault. However, redundancy can also be an ideal opportunity to do something you’ve always dreamed of, especially with a handy cash injection to get you started.

So how can you avoid the post-redundancy blues and turn redundancy to your advantage? 

Stay Positive

First and foremost, it’s important to recognise that it’s your job that’s been made redundant, not you. It’s nothing personal. You’re still a valuable and useful member of society. Your employers are simply reacting to the current economic climate in the best way they know. If the economy recovered next week, they would no doubt want you back – but you might not want to go. Their loss, not yours!

Despite the picture of doom and gloom painted by the media, there are still jobs that need to be done, and people who are looking for specifically what you have to offer. It might just take a little longer than before, to connect with the right people.

Stay Confident

If you’ve been working in the same job or industry for a long time, you may be feeling like you’ve lost part of your identity, as our identity and feelings of self-worth are often firmly linked to the job we do. You may be uncertain about what to do next, especially if there have been a lot of redundancies in your industry, or if you’ve been in the same industry for most of your working life.

Be kind to yourself. Go for walks in the park, by the sea or in the countryside, visit friends, go to an art gallery or a matinee performance… This isn’t just being idle, or burying your head in the sand. It’s giving your creative side an opportunity to express itself. The chances are, it didn’t get much of a look-in when you were at work – so allow yourself to play for a while, and see what ideas come up about what you want to do next.

Stay Motivated

When you’re considering your options, ask yourself “why would I apply for this job?” or “why would I set up this business?”. If the answer to that question is nothing more than “to pay the bills”, you might want to choose something else, or adopt a different attitude. If your heart isn’t in what you’re applying yourself to, your prospective clients and employers will notice it in your words and your body language. It’s a bit like asking someone out on a date, not because you fancy them, but because you’re just desperate to go out with anyone!!

Motivation is only a problem when you’re trying to make yourself do something you don’t really want to do. If you can find something that inspires you, you won’t be able to wait until the alarm goes off before leaping out of bed in the morning, to get stuck into it!

Be Persistent

Once you’re clear about what you want to do, keep doing whatever it takes to achieve your goal, bearing in mind that it might take longer than you anticipated, and you might need to do something else to keep paying the bills in the meantime. If it’s truly what you want, then no amount of waiting, or obstacles will prevent you from getting where you want to be.

“Be all you can be” has been the Army’s theme line for 20 years, and most likely you have heard it more than once. I often ask myself how many people have stopped to truly analyze the meaning of those five short words. You see, you may be somewhat contented with the way things are in your life, but that is not to say that you are being all you can be.

If you were performing at your highest potential, you wouldn’t be somewhat contented, but completely fulfilled. If that is you, then accept my apologies. This article is not for you.

Still reading? Then you are still looking for what makes you tick, still aspiring for something deeper, better and more meaningful in life.

Even if you are submerged in problems, don’t let that be the cause of your not pursuing all that you can be. Aspirations, dreams and goals should be allowed to live within your heart so you can live a life of purpose and fulfillment.

Let’s review a few points so you can discover what makes you tick.

1. Do you know what it is you really want?

If you’ve been on the path of self growth for awhile, you know this is the eternal question that keeps on popping up every time you read personal development material. Seems like most everybody should be able to answer that question rather fast, but you know it is not as easy as it sounds.

While you may have a long list of things you want to do in life, once you probe a bit you’ll discover just a handful of them are truly significant. It is your duty to discover what makes you tick so you can pursue those things that will create fulfillment in your life.

Start by sorting out the things that you are good at; those activities that you enjoy so much that you end up getting involved that you lose track of time as the world around you appears to be non-existent. Explore your abilities, your talents and your experiences. Diligence is key to uncover your real purpose.

2. Do you need to change?

According to your findings, you may discover that some things need to change if you are to pursue your new path. Most likely, this will look close to impossible at first; but if you are listening to your heart, you will find a way to change and do whatever it takes in order to reach your intended destination.

Initially, all changes seem difficult. After all, we are creatures of habit. However, changes are attainable when you are moving from the heart. It just takes commitment, determination and a solid plan of action. The end result will be worth it!

3. Can you see the bright side in your new discovery?

With so much happening around you, with your many obligations and responsibilities, sometimes it’s going to seem as if there was no room to even consider a change. At times, it may all seem so farfetched and out of this world that you may be tempted to return to your prior “state” and settle in your known lifestyle.

It is in these moments when you must strive to remain faithful to your dream. Think often on what makes you tick and know that there is light at the end of the tunnel. Be true to your calling, and you will see the bright side for sure!

4. Are you comfortable with your chosen path?

There’s always the easy way and the right way when it comes to deciding everything in life. You are a unique individual and as such, you have the exclusive right to decide what path to follow. If you are uncomfortable at any time with your decision, you must explore the “why”.

Make sure your being uncomfortable has nothing to do with the act of changing itself. As mentioned above, we are creatures of habit. This is why changes in general can make us feel uncomfortable. If the later is the case, just keep on pressing forward and with faith until the change becomes part of your new way of being.

5. Have you done enough for yourself?

While going through this process, feelings of guilt may make themselves present. This is because most of us have been taught that it is nobler to be of service to others, so we grow up thinking of others first.

However, this brings discontentment and in large doses it can be dangerous for us and those in our immediate circle of influence. Always remember that when we do positive things for ourselves, we will also benefit those around us. When you decide to do something of value for yourself, you’ll see positive changes in your life and you will do things you could have never imagined doing.

6. Are you happy with where you are today?

This may seem like an unfair question so let it be answered! You may be happy with some aspects of your life, like being a good and loving mom or dad to your kids, a good partner and a good worker. However, once you discover what makes you tick; your life takes new heights that will change your life for the better. Your kids and partner will love you forever. And the same goes for everything else in life!

7. How much could you have?

There is no rule that dictates how much or how little you could have. You are the only one to determine that. While greed is not a positive quality, in reality the sky is the limit. The only aspect to be conscious about is keeping your feet firmly planted on the floor. Never forget the intention of pursuing your dreams: that of feeling fulfilled, which seldom has to do with material possessions.

8. What is your motivation?

This is an answer you have to find out for yourself. There may be many things that can make you happy, but to choose “the one” that will keep you pressing forward when the going gets tough may be hard to determine at first. Dedicate some time to explore your feelings and discover your motives to find the real “reason” behind your goal. This is extremely important as it will keep you from giving up whenever you feel like it.

So, have you discovered what makes you tick? You can be just about anything you always wanted to be, but realize it takes work, determination, commitment, action and time to achieve anything worthwhile. Do not think on the problems you may find on the way. That would be the equivalent to giving up before you even start your journey. You will cross those bridges when you get to them, one by one. Always remember that self growth and improvement is a life time process. Moreover, it is not just about the physical or philosophical change you have to undergo, but it’s about having the courage to follow your calling.

Request Granted, Ouch!

Request Granted, Ouch!

Since you’ve lived this long I’m sure you are aware that some things in life are irreversible. For example, a haircut, an amputation, an injury, an injection, a death, an accident, and these are just a few. But what about Requests, are they irreversible? They are if you’re at a fast food restaurant.

What about when you make a request to an unseen force? Do you really think about the implications? I encourage you to read this thriller before making your next serious request to your fairy god-mother, god-father, or your Higher Power.

The blissful couple sat at the table in their humble clean little home. The ambiance is set for peaceful and romantic; just for the two of them. This is not just another quiet celebration. This one is spectacular. It is their 40th wedding anniversary, and incidentally, it is also their 60th birthday. Yes, the same birth date. What a fantastic set of events rolled up in one!

They enjoy the well planned dinner and sit to reminisce the forty years of marriage with its ups and downs. They laugh, they cry, they smile, and share the twinkle in their eyes.

Suddenly there’s a ‘poof’ sound and right before their eyes appears a fairy god-mother. She compliments the couple for their stay-togetherness through the years. She then tells them that she is there to grant them each just one request. The couple is ecstatic!

But the fairy god-mother warns them: Be very cautious on your request, you only get one and it is irreversible!

After some time of serious thought, the wife says she’s ready. The wife is reminded that the request is irreversible. She makes her request: Travel Tickets for 2 on a 5-Day Caribbean Cruise fully paid including lodging, flight, meals, car rental, and extra cash to enjoy with her husband. Then ‘poof’ the travel tickets and a stack of cash appear at the table. The wife is very pleased.

Wow, says the husband, I’m ready! The fairy god-mother reminds him the request is irreversible. He makes his request: A wife that’s 30 years younger than me and will please me. Then ‘poof’, he is now 90 years old. Ouch!

What about you, do you really sit down and make a list of pros and cons about a serious request to your unseen force, god-mother, god-father, or Higher Power? Do you include others in your plans? While you’re working on your list, remember that some things in life are irreversible. So think before you leap.

Remember the Golden Rule?

Do you remember the Golden Rule? We used to be taught it in school. It goes like this — “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” I heard that so much growing up. Treat others the way you want to be treated is a pretty amazing, a pretty profound bit of advice. Advice worth adhering too.

Think about it. What if everyone followed the Golden Rule? What if everyone decided to heed its simple yet significant challenge? There would be no prejudice, no hate, no violence, no wars, no cheating, no lying, no stealing, no killing. Crimes would stop. Wars would cease. There would be peace. If… we all followed that one simple rule. One profound, incredible, totally simplistic, little rule — to treat others the way we’d like to be treated.

In this world the Golden Rule has become antiquated to the point of being obsolete. There is a new rule, a rule opposite of the Golden Rule. It is rather a tarnished one. One that actually twists about the Golden Rule. The rule of the world today is “Do to others as they did to you.” Get even. Don’t let anyone treat you bad. If you do you are weak, cowardly and stupid. In the world’s terms, the one who doesn’t retaliate is a push over.

So according to the world’s standards, Jesus Christ was a push over — a weakling that people could take advantage of. Jesus didn’t fight back. He didn’t do to others what others did to Him. When others didn’t appreciate or acknowledge the things He did for them, He didn’t pout and complain to His friends. When others lied about Him, He didn’t retaliate. When others mocked Him, He was silent. When others spat in His face, He kept His cool. When they beat Him, He stood quietly and took it. He didn’t have to get the last word in. Instead, He held His tongue. Then, after they hung Him on a splintery old cross to be ridiculed, publicly humiliated, tortured and killed, He forgave. And, by so doing, He overcame.

Looking at the life of our Savior, the One who withdrew from the normal standards of life, withstood the trials and persecutions, and withheld the notions to get back at His persecutors, we see anything but weakness. We see the epitome of strength. We see someone who sacrificed Himself for the good of others. It is because of that sacrifice that we are not condemned to a fiery hell. It is because of His forgiveness, grace and mercy that we can find hope, joy and peace.

Jesus dared to be different. He dared to do right. He dared to take a stand. By so doing, He made a difference. He overcame evil with good. He fulfilled the Golden Rule.

Now if we were to apply the Golden Rule in our lives, one by one we could make a difference too. We could sow love where hate rules, peace where there is strife, kindness where there is malice, joy where there is sorrow. One by one we could plant the seeds that would change the world, if only we would dare to do so.

The Man Who Could Not Find His Heart

I know a man named Eduardo who has great difficulty expressing what is in his heart. He has a beautiful heart, yet it is unknown to him. When he came to the Earth in the beginning, he left behind the sense of the sacred. Instead, he wrapped himself in the cloak of human pleasure, experiencing the joys of the world without limitation. These joys took him in the direction of excess. He found himself wanting more of everything – more wealth, more life, more youth, more power, more young women to adorn himself with. He grew so used to satisfying his wants that eventually his heart became lost to him. It became so well hidden that he did not know how to find it again.

When I met Eduardo, he was looking once again for his heart. He was beginning a spiritual search for love. No longer was he caught up in all the things that he once wanted, but instead, he was immune to wanting anything at all. Indeed, he could barely tell, from day to day, what he really wanted. His wanting had turned to numbness.

This is the way that it happens, sometimes, with the healing of a soul. What was once excess in one direction becomes lack in the opposite direction. The soul, in its wisdom, knows what kind of healing is needed and proceeds at its own pace to institute it.

Nevertheless, this beautiful soul could not easily find his heart though he looked for it. Mostly, he felt nothing. The path of return emerged out of this nothingness. It was the path of longing to be alive once more. The path of longing for love. As he experienced the pain of being closed down, the desire grew in him to open up.

This was the beginning of his true story – the story of the path of return.

Few people understand the power of the human mind. It takes strong mental focus to create the right thought waves. Strong thought waves correspond with the law of attraction to magnetically draw the things you want towards you.

One very common problem most people face, is the ability to maintain a strong mental focus. Think of it, how often do you sit down to work on a project only to find your mind jumping from one concept to another concept? How often do you settle down to meditate and find your thoughts jumping to what happened earlier in the day? Without strong mental focus upon a singular idea you could not be successful with the law of attraction.

It is a fact that it takes mental focus to stimulate law of attraction a new ways. At the present moment you are already feeding lots of your mental focus to your present environment. A guided meditation from Hethball

This is Hethball speaking. We want you to take a look at yourself in a way you are not accustomed to. Pretend that you are the image on a photographic negative. What if you existed in a dimension of reality where the photographic negative was the normal way to be? What would happen if you were a reverse of yourself? If you were taken from your familiar reality and placed into a projecting device, and found yourself existing in two places at once, you might not know where your reality was. This is how you must see yourself in this life: there are parts of yourself that exist elsewhere than where you are now. Also accept the turmoil that comes about because you can’t identify specifically what you are. Then, when you find that you are upset in your emotions, you will accept what you find: an exchange of energy between different locations and different kinds of nature; the shift that happens when one space is created within another. You must accept this kind of exchange as normal.

Now we want you to relax inside. Let yourself become at peace. Notice a shifting within the peace. You are always moving about inside. There is a potential energy there. These are your emotions, the potential shifting. When you try to limit these shifts, you interfere with the progress of reality, because your belief system holds that these shifts are not good, and you unconsciously raise internal barriers. We want you to unlock these dimensions. Let yourself relax again. Imagine that there is a high-level force entering the streams of your consciousness. This high-level force from another dimension begins to overtake you. Notice how you respond when you sense something overtaking your consciousness. Be aware of the barriers that rise up, and of how you shift into a high gear of resistance. Now we want you to let things flow through. No matter what it is, let it go by you. No matter what you feel, let the feeling happen.

See yourself rising to a higher level of reality. When you look around, you see that there is flow happening. All around you is flowingness. The idea of a higher dimension contains the idea of fleecy whiteness, of clouds flowing by. Shifting happens easily and effortlessly on the higher planes of reality. This is how you must become. See yourself as something that floats in the wind. Now we’d like you to remember a time in your past when your emotions were hurt, when some disaster befell you. And we want you to increase the energy input to your memory of that time until you can see the higher energies filling you up. We want you to see how energy flows through you as you were in that previous experience, to aid you in healing that moment. You are sending the light of the present time, the understanding of flow that you now have, into your experience in the past. See how you flow, how light you become when flowing happens… how light you feel now, letting it happen in the past. See how you unravel the darkness, the mystery and the confusion, and make them light. Make yourself as if you couldn’t hear the sounds, as if the disaster’s wind passed by you but didn’t touch you because you were like an open door. Now open your heart and let love pour through it. Let the experience of love permeate your thought consciousness so that you send it into the previous darkness, the pain that you felt, the emotions that rise up with the pain. Let yourself experience laughter and love together to help heal the past.

Now you’ve created joy, and joy will help you overcome your pain and suffering. When you find joy, your emotions rise to a higher level and your emotions are at peace. You now have a peaceful understanding of how things work in the universe, and how you can add joy to your life. Don’t be afraid to come here often. Add laughter to the sounds you enjoy when you express yourself. Laugh wholeheartedly. You are more alive when you have flow. Increase your flow by laughing out loud, letting your energy bodies bounce, letting them feel bouncy in the winds of change, in the flow of love, in the expression of joy. Imagine yourself laughing loudly; let yourself see it happen, joyfulness overtaking you. How often do you let yourself feel enjoyment? Now, the universe loves this. It loves when you’re happy. You will find freedom by bringing a joyful attitude to everything in which you are involved. Then your emotions will be free of their bondage to the earth plane, to the past, to your dark experiences. With an attitude of joyfulness you will become free again. You will regain the freedom you had before. The wings of joy will carry you to heavenly experiences. Now go with love into the worldly experiences, and take joy with you.

In a Nutshell Imagine being a photographic negative in a projecting device. See a projection of yourself. Being both a negative and a projection is confusing to the emotions, but notice a flow of energy between the two places. Notice that there are some obstacles to that flow. Imagine yourself floating upward. As you do, notice that the energy flows through the barriers. Remember emotional pain that you have experienced. Send light and love to that time and see how you can increase the flow through the pain. Let the love become laughter and joy. Laugh out loud.

An Organized Home is a Happy Home

My friends Anita and Walter live in New York City. For a city apartment, theirs is a comfortable size, but it’s by no means big. They enjoy objets d’art, music, and reading. They are gourmet cooks, they travel, and they ride their bikes all over the city. They make room for their hobbies and pleasures by being very careful about what they acquire and keep and by using home organizers.

I haven’t looked into the depths of their closets, but I have seen a number of impressive organizing and storage methods. In their kitchen everything has its own place. The cutlery drawer has wire basket dividers, same for the cooking utensils. The pots hang from hooks attached to a plastic-coated wire mesh rack that hangs above the stove. After they go shopping, Walter empties the boxes of cereal and pasta into clear glass or plastic canisters. Teabags go into perfect teabag holders. I never put anything away when I visit for fear of putting it in the wrong place.

Anita and Walter store their out-of-season clothes in a storage locker in the basement of their building. The locker has plenty of closet organizers, shelves, racks, etc. Their boots and shoes are in special shoe holders that hang from the rod in the closet.

No space is wasted in their bedroom. The headboard has shelves to hold books. Under-the-bed storage boxes contain-well, I don’t know what they contain; I just know they are there. But Anita and Walter know exactly what’s in those boxes because they keep lists of the contents. Walter showed me his sock drawer the other day; pairs of socks are lined up neatly in a special sock storage box. I spend way too much time looking for pairs of socks, so I was very impressed.

The bathroom is fascinating. Perfectly fitting shelves in the shower hold all the shampoos, soaps, and accessories. The waterproof radio has its own shelf. A mirror on a radiating arm attaches to the shower wall. A shower cap hangs from a clothespin that’s attached to the wire shampoo shelf.

Around the sink everything has its place. Even the headband Anita uses to keep her hair out of her face when she washes has a special spot on the towel rack. Of course they have soap holders and toothbrush holders.

Their bikes hang on sturdy hooks in the hallway-ready for use but out of the way. Bookcases line that same hallway. And of course the books are categorized and alphabetized.

As for their desks, every paper has its place. Walter has several multi-tiered paper holders on his desk. Boxes of different colors hold different categories of papers-bills, school papers, etc. Anita has a small desk. Every piece of paper is in some sort of box, holder, or container. Personally, I can’t find anything unless it’s sitting on top of a pile, but I truly admire their organization.

I don’t know where Anita and Walter buy their home organizers and storage products. I’m sure there are plenty of places in New York City. Or maybe they buy them online; that’s what I would do.

Leadership Begins Within - Changing the Way You Think

How many times in your day do you have to do things you are not really looking forward to? Do you have to get to that meeting today? Do you have to hurry home and make dinner? Do you have to spend time coaching your team to help them achieve their potential? Do you have to take training to improve your skills?

If you look at leaders, we will find that great leaders begin by leading themselves first. In order to lead yourself, you need to start changing the way you think and the way you approach situations. By altering your perception of something, you will alter your experience.

Lets go back to those things you “have to” do. Now, let me introduce an idea to you. Imagine that you had been faced with a situation where you were not able to do these things ever again. You made it through that situation, but your perception changed dramatically. No longer do you feel forced to do things, you feel lucky to be able to do things. Welcome to the “get to” philosophy.

What is the “get to” philosophy? It’s simple really. When you face moments in your day where you “have to” do something, make the choice to be grateful for being ABLE to do it instead. Let me give you some examples:

I GET TO go to work today.

I GET TO help a client and make their day better through our interaction.

I GET TO share my leadership wisdom with my team.

I GET TO help someone become a better leader themselves.

I GET TO leave work and go home to my family.

I GET TO do my household chores.

By changing one small word in your thinking, you will alter the way you perceive each task. Better yet, you don’t need to have any life-altering moments to adapt it, and you can share it with your team and help them adopt this too.
